Community/Parent Voice Committee

The community/parent voice committee met for the first time on Monday, October 13th, 2008. This group had not been able to meet previously. Our first step was to review the action plan created in June. While the action plan had a lot of good ideas, it was decided that we needed to further study the issue of parent/community involvement. We came up with the following essential question: How can we increase parent and community involvement? After setting our mission with the previously listed essential question, we started to discuss what community/ parent involvement looks like. This discussion lead to our question for the group.

What should community/ parent involvement look like?

I have a handout, from a VSAC meeting, which might be helpful.

The information on the handout is attributed to Joyce Epstein, "School Family and Community Partnerships". The list: 1)parenting which supports learning 2)good home-school communication 3)opportunities for parents to participate by volunteering 4)soliciting parent input in the decision making process for school policies and practices 5) collaborating with community members with a vested interest in the education of young adolescents.

I think we need to discuss having another "Literacy Night." Give it another title or whatever you want to call it. We need to have something going on and invite everyone. Make a real effort to talk with people and ask them to attend. Get a committment. Show off something! No one-on-one with parents; have snacks or prizes. Get excited. The Newsletter and flyers that go home, even the Front Porch Forum are not the same as writing a personal invitation or calling. First, we must have something for them to want to come for a visit.
